The Girijatmaj Temple in Lenyadri, Maharashtra, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha, specifically representing him as the son of Goddess Parvati (“Girija” meaning Parvati, “Atmaj” meaning son). It is one of the eight holy temples in the Ashtavinayak Yatra, located inside the 8th of 18 ancient, rock-cut Buddhist caves (1st-3rd century AD) on a hill overlooking the Kukadi River.

Key Features & Significance:

Unique Setting: Situated inside a, 53-foot long, rock-cut, pillarless cave hall that was once part of a Buddhist monastery.

Ashtavinayak Shrine: It is the 6th temple visited in the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage circuit.

Access: Pilgrims climb approximately 307-338 steps to reach the temple, which faces south.

Architecture: The temple is carved out of a single rock and is known for its serene, natural lighting, with no artificial lighting inside the main sanctum.

Idol Details: The idol of Ganesha faces east and is carved directly onto the cave wall.

Location: Situated on the Lenyadri hills near Junnar, about 96 km from Pune.

The temple is popular during Ganesh Jayanti and Ganesh Chaturthi. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) due to the ancient nature of the caves.
