History of the Temple

Manakula Vinayagar Temple is one of the most famous and ancient temples in Puducherry, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple existed even before the arrival of the French in Puducherry. The name ‘Manakula’ is derived from the Tamil words ‘Manal’ (sand) and ‘Kulam’ (pond), referring to a pond that once existed near the temple.

Despite attempts by French rulers to demolish the temple during colonial times, it remained intact due to strong resistance from devotees. Over time, the temple gained popularity and became a major spiritual center. Lord Vinayagar here is worshipped as a powerful deity who removes obstacles and blesses devotees with prosperity.

The temple is also known for its elephant ‘Lakshmi’, who blesses devotees by placing her trunk on their heads. Today, Manakula Vinayagar Temple stands as a symbol of faith, devotion, and cultural heritage in Puducherry.
