History of the Temple
Kasba Ganapathi Temple, located in the historic core of Pune, Maharashtra, is regarded as the Gramdaivat (chief deity) of the city. The temple is traditionally associated with the period of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. According to popular belief, Jijabai, Shivaji’s mother, installed the idol of Lord Ganesha here in the 17th century after the family settled in Pune. Over time, the temple gained great religious and cultural importance and came to be revered as the presiding Ganesha of Pune.
During the public Ganesh festival popularized by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the late 19th century, Kasba Ganapathi was accorded the honor of being the ‘Manacha Pahila Ganpati’ (the foremost honored Ganesha) of Pune. The temple continues to be central to community worship, drawing devotees from Maharashtra and neighboring regions, including Karnataka traditions of Ganesha worship.
