Varaha Avatar – The Boar Incarnation of Lord Vishnu

Varaha is the third avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. The word ‘Varaha’ means ‘boar’ in Sanskrit. This avatar represents the divine power of Vishnu to protect the universe and restore cosmic order (Dharma).

According to Hindu scriptures, especially the Puranas, the demon Hiranyaksha dragged the Earth
(Bhudevi) into the deep cosmic ocean after receiving a boon that made him nearly invincible.

The Earth was submerged in darkness, and the balance of the universe was disturbed.

To save the Earth, Lord Vishnu took the form of a gigantic boar known as Varaha. He descended into the cosmic waters, fought a fierce battle with Hiranyaksha for thousands of years, and eventually killed the demon using his divine strength.
After defeating Hiranyaksha, Varaha gently lifted the Earth on his tusks and restored it to its proper place in the universe. He then re-established order, stability, and righteousness.
The Varaha avatar symbolizes strength, protection, and the triumph of good over evil. It also represents the idea that the Divine will always intervene to protect creation when it is in danger.
Varaha is worshipped in various temples across India, with the Varaha Temple in Tirumala and the Varaha Cave Temple in Udayagiri being well-known examples.
