Vamana – Fifth Avatar of Lord Vishnu
Vamana is the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology. He appeared in the form of a dwarf Brahmin to restore cosmic balance and protect the universe from the tyranny of King Mahabali.
Historical and Mythological Background
King Mahabali was a powerful and generous Asura king who ruled the three worlds—Earth, Heaven, and the Netherworld. Although he was a righteous ruler, his growing power threatened the authority of the Devas (gods). The Devas sought help from Lord Vishnu to restore balance.
The Story of Vamana
Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana and visited King Mahabali during a grand yajna (sacrificial ceremony). Vamana asked the king for a humble gift—three steps of land measured by his feet.
Mahabali, known for his generosity, agreed to the request. Suddenly, Vamana expanded into a विशाल (giant) form called Trivikrama. With his first step, he covered the Earth. With the second step, he covered the heavens. There was no space left for the third step.
Spiritual Significance
Festivals
The story of Vamana and King Mahabali is celebrated during the festival of Onam, especially in the Indian state of Kerala.
