Among the many names of Lord Krishna, one important name is “Ranchod” (also written as Ranachhod or Ranchhod),
which means “One who left the battlefield.”

Historical and Mythological Background
After the death of Kansa, Krishna’s maternal uncle, Krishna faced repeated attacks from Kansa’s father-in-law, King Jarasandha of Magadha. Jarasandha attacked Mathura 17 times with a powerful army.
Each time, Krishna defeated him but did not kill him, as Jarasandha had a destiny linked to future events.
When Jarasandha attacked for the 18th time, Krishna chose not to fight. Instead, He safely moved the Yadava people from Mathura to a new city built in the sea, called Dwarka. This act protected His people from constant war and destruction.
At the same time, the demon Kalayavana attacked Mathura. Krishna led him away into a cave where King Muchukunda was sleeping. Due to a divine boon, anyone who disturbed Muchukunda’s sleep would be burned to ashes.
When Kalayavana woke him, he was destroyed instantly.
