Lord Narasimha – Avatar of Lord Vishnu
Lord Narasimha is one of the most powerful and significant avatars of Lord Vishnu. He appeared to protect his devotee Prahlada and to destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu.
The word “Narasimha” is derived from two Sanskrit words
“Nara” meaning man and “Simha” meaning lion. Thus, Lord Narasimha appeared in a unique form that was half-man and half-lion.
According to Hindu mythology, Hiranyakashipu performed severe penance and received a boon from Lord Brahma that he would not be killed by man or animal, not during the day or night, not inside or outside the house, not on earth or in the sky, and not by any weapon.
Because of this boon, Hiranyakashipu became arrogant and declared himself to be God. However, his own son Prahlada was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Despite many cruel attempts by Hiranyakashipu to kill Prahlada, the child remained unharmed due to Lord Vishnu’s divine protection.
