History of the Temple

The Vishalakshi Temple, located at Mir Ghat on the banks of the sacred River Ganges in Varanasi, is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. According to Hindu mythology, when Goddess Sati immolated herself, Lord Shiva carried her body across the universe in grief. Parts of her body fell at various places, forming the Shakti Peethas. It is believed that the earrings (or ‘eyes’ in some legends) of the Goddess fell at this spot, making it an important pilgrimage site.

The temple symbolizes divine feminine energy and is closely associated with Goddess Parvati’s form—Vishalakshi, meaning “the one with wide eyes.” The temple architecture reflects traditional Hindu style with intricate carvings and a peaceful ambience. It holds high spiritual significance and attracts lakhs of devotees seeking blessings for prosperity, marital harmony, and spiritual awakening.
