History of the Temple

Ucchi Pillayar Temple is a famous Lord Ganesha temple located on the Rockfort hill in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The temple is situated at the top of the Rockfort, around 273 feet above ground level. According to legend, Lord Ganesha helped Lord Vibhishana by placing the Ranganathaswamy idol safely, and later he manifested himself at the peak of the rock as Ucchi Pillayar. The temple is believed to have been built during the Nayak period. Devotees believe that worshipping here removes obstacles and grants success. The temple also offers a panoramic view of Tiruchirappalli city and the Cauvery river.
