History of the Temple
Tarapith is a famous Shakti Peetha located in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara, a form of the Divine Mother worshipped in Tantric traditions. According to mythology, when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava with Sati’s body, her third eye is believed to have fallen at this place.
Tarapith is also historically associated with the famous saint Bamakhepa, known as the ‘mad saint,’ who spent much of his life in the temple premises and practiced Tantric sadhana. Next to the temple lies the sacred cremation ground (Maha Smashan), considered a powerful spiritual site for Tantric rituals.
The temple’s worship style combines traditional Hindu customs with ancient Tantric practices, making Tarapith one of the most significant pilgrimage sites for Shakta devotees.
