History of the Temple
Sri Parthasarathy Temple is one of the oldest temples in Chennai, originally built in the 8th century during the Pallava dynasty by King Narasimhavarman I. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his role as Parthasarathy, the charioteer of Arjuna in the Mahabharata.
The temple is unique as it worships Lord Krishna along with his family members—Rukmini, Satyabhama, Balarama, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha. The temple also houses shrines for Lord Rama, Lord Narasimha, Lord Hanuman, and Andal.
Over centuries, the temple was expanded and renovated by various South Indian dynasties, including the Cholas and Vijayanagara rulers. Today, it stands as a prominent spiritual and cultural landmark in Chennai, attracting devotees and tourists from across India.
