History of the Temple
Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The site has a long and eventful history dating back thousands of years. The original temple is said to have existed since ancient times but underwent destruction and reconstruction multiple times under different rulers. The present temple complex was rebuilt in the 20th century and attracts millions of devotees every year. It houses the sacred prison cell (Garbha Griha) where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born to Devaki and Vasudeva. The temple stands as one of the most significant pilgrimage centers in India and is deeply associated with Krishna’s early life and stories described in the Bhagavata Purana.
