History of the Temple
Shri Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple is one of the most famous and revered Ganesh temples in India. The temple was established by Dagdusheth Halwai, a sweet maker and trader, along with his wife Lakshmibai, in the late 19th century. After losing their only son to a plague epidemic, they built the temple in memory of their child. The Ganesh idol became widely known for fulfilling devotees’ wishes, and the temple soon gained popularity.
During India’s freedom movement, leaders such as Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak encouraged public Ganesh festivals, and the Dagdusheth Ganpati Trust actively participated in social and national causes. Today, the temple is not only a major spiritual center but also actively involved in charity, education, and healthcare activities.
