History of the Temple

Shitla Mata Mandir in Gurgaon is one of the most ancient and revered temples in Haryana. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Shitla, who is believed to be the protector against diseases, especially smallpox and other infections. According to local legends, this temple is over several hundred years old.

It is believed that Mata Shitla was worshipped by the local people even before the establishment of Gurgaon city. The idol of the goddess is considered self-manifested, and devotees have immense faith in her divine powers. The temple gained prominence during the Mughal period and later during British rule, when devotees from nearby regions started visiting regularly.

Shitla Mata Mandir stands as a major spiritual center in Gurgaon, attracting thousands of devotees, especially during festivals and Mondays. The temple complex has been renovated over time, but it still retains its traditional spiritual atmosphere.

Main Poojas Performed

The rituals at this temple center around the cooling and healing nature of the deity.

    • Shitla Mata Aarti (Primary Pooja): Performed twice daily (morning and evening), this is the most important collective ritual where devotees offer prayers for health and protection.
    • Mundan Sanskar (Tonsuring): A very prominent ritual here. Thousands of families bring their infants for their first haircut, seeking the Goddess’s blessings for the child’s long life and health.
    • Jal Abhishekam: Devotees offer water (Jal) to the deity, symbolizing the “cooling” effect associated with Mata Shitla, who is believed to cure heat-related ailments like smallpox and measles.
    • Bhoga Offering: Traditional offerings include halwa-puri, sweets, and sometimes medicinal herbs or neem leaves, which are sacred to the Goddess.

Attire (Dressing Guidelines) for Pooja

While there is no rigid, modern “uniform” enforced by a gatekeeper, the temple follows traditional Vedic decorum.

Men:

    • Traditional Indian wear such as Kurta-Pajama or Dhoti is highly recommended for special poojas. While casual wear like jeans and t-shirts is permitted for general darshan, shorts and sleeveless vests are generally discouraged as a mark of respect.

Women:

    • Sarees or Salwar-Kameez with a Dupatta are the standard. It is a traditional custom for women to cover their heads with a veil or dupatta while inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Restrictions:

    • Footwear must be deposited at the designated stands outside. Leather items (belts, wallets) should ideally be kept away from the inner shrine
