History of the Temple
The Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world and a major pilgrimage destination dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is the first of the 108 Divya Desams and is revered by Alwars. The temple’s origins trace back thousands of years, with contributions from the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties.
Its architecture is a masterpiece, featuring 21 gopurams, including the towering Rajagopuram, which stands at 236 feet. The temple complex spans 156 acres, making it one of India’s largest sacred structures. The deity, Lord Ranganatha, is depicted reclining on the serpent Adisesha. The temple has played a significant role during various historical periods, including invasions and reconstructions, symbolizing resilience and devotion.
