History of the Temple
Kushinagar is a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site believed to be the place where Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana (final liberation) after his earthly life. The primary attraction is the Mahaparinirvana Temple, which houses a 6.1-meter-long reclining statue of Lord Buddha carved from monolithic red sandstone. The site has been mentioned in ancient Buddhist texts and has been excavated by archaeologists revealing stupas, monasteries, and artifacts from the Mauryan, Gupta, and Kushana periods. Kushinagar is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
