History of the Temple
The Kanchi Kamakshi Temple, located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most revered temples dedicated to Goddess Parvati in the form of Kamakshi Amman. It is considered one of the three holy Shakti Peethas, the other two being in Madurai and Varanasi.
The temple was originally built by the Pallava rulers around the 6th century CE and later renovated by the Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties. Goddess Kamakshi is depicted in a seated posture, signifying peace and prosperity. The temple’s golden vimana and the sanctum’s powerful spiritual aura attract millions of devotees each year.
The temple is also historically associated with Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have established the Sri Chakra here to calm the fierce form of the Goddess.
