History of the Temple
Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. It is believed that the toes of Goddess Sati fell at this spot, making it a highly sacred site. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali in the form of Kalika.
The original temple is said to date back to ancient times, but the present structure was built in the early 19th century under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family. The unique idol of the Goddess, made of black stone, is distinct because it depicts three eyes, a long projected tongue, and four hands.
Kalighat has also been an important cultural and spiritual center for centuries, attracting millions of devotees every year.
