History of the Temple
The Gomateshwara (Bahubali) Temple is one of the most important Jain pilgrimage centers in India. It is located at Shravanabelagola in the Hassan district of Karnataka. The temple is famous for the monolithic statue of Lord Gomateshwara (Bahubali), which stands at about 57 feet tall and is considered one of the largest free-standing statues in the world.
The statue was commissioned in 981 CE by the Ganga dynasty minister Chavundaraya. Bahubali, also known as Gomateshwara, was the son of the first Jain Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha. The statue symbolizes renunciation, meditation, and spiritual victory.
The temple complex includes several ancient Jain basadis (temples), inscriptions, and monuments dating from the Ganga, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara periods. Shravanabelagola has been a major center of Jain learning and pilgrimage for more than a thousand years.
