History of the Temple

Dodda Ganapathi Temple, located in Basavanagudi in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is famous for its massive monolithic idol of Lord Ganesha, also called ‘Dodda’ meaning ‘big’ in Kannada. The idol is about 18 feet in height and 16 feet in width and is carved from a single stone. The temple is believed to have been established during the 16th century by Kempegowda I, the founder of Bengaluru. According to local lore, the idol was discovered on a rocky hill and later consecrated and worshipped. The temple stands close to the famous Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi) and the Bugle Rock Park, forming an important historic and cultural cluster in the city. Over time, the temple has become a significant devotional center, attracting devotees and tourists from across India.
