History of the Temple
Brahmeswara Temple, located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is a significant example of early Kalinga architectural style. It was constructed in 1058 CE during the reign of the Somavamsi dynasty. The temple is believed to have been commissioned by Queen Kolavati Devi, the mother of King Udyota Kesari. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is renowned for its intricate stone carvings, sculptures of musicians and dancers, and detailed iconography.
Built using durable sandstone, the temple features a sanctum (deul) and a hall (jagamohana). It marks an important architectural shift with the introduction of iron beams in construction. The temple complex also houses several subsidiary shrines and showcases the artistic and cultural richness of medieval Odisha.
