History of the Temple
Bakul Tala is a sacred Vaishnava pilgrimage site located in Puri, Odisha. It is closely associated with Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the great 15th–16th century saint and proponent of Bhakti Yoga. Bakul Tala was the residence of Sri Haridas Thakur, one of the foremost disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and a revered acharya of the Harinama Sankirtan tradition.
The name ‘Bakul Tala’ comes from the Bakul tree under which Haridas Thakur lived and constantly chanted the holy names of Lord Krishna. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu regularly visited this place to meet Haridas Thakur, making it spiritually significant for Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
Today, Bakul Tala is maintained as a peaceful shrine commemorating the life and devotion of Haridas Thakur and the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is considered an important stop for pilgrims visiting the Jagannath Temple and other Chaitanya-related sites in Puri.
