History of the Temple
Attahas Temple, located in Labhpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. According to Hindu mythology, after the self-immolation of Goddess Sati, Lord Shiva carried her body in grief, and parts of her body fell at different locations across the Indian subcontinent. These locations became sacred Shakti Peethas.
At Attahas, it is believed that the ‘Lower Lip of Goddess Sati’ fell, making it a significant spiritual site. The name ‘Attahas’ is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘a loud laugh,’ and the temple symbolizes the powerful and divine energy of the Goddess. The temple’s primary deity is known as Phullara (a form of the Goddess), and Bhairava associated with the site is known as Vishwesh.
The temple attracts thousands of pilgrims throughout the year and is a place of deep religious significance, surrounded by traditional Bengal village landscapes.
