Damodara Avatar

Damodara – An Avatar Name of Lord Krishna (Vishnu)

Damodara is a sacred name of Lord Krishna, who is worshipped as one of the most complete avatars (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. The name ‘Damodara’ comes from two Sanskrit words: ‘Dama’ meaning rope, and ‘Udara’ meaning belly. Thus, Damodara means ‘the one whose belly was bound by a rope’.

Meaning and Significance of the Name Damodara

The name Damodara symbolizes the deep love between the Supreme Lord and His devotees. Although Krishna is the all-powerful Supreme Being, He allowed Himself to be bound by His mother Yashoda’s love. This shows that devotion (bhakti) is more powerful than strength, knowledge, or authority.

Story of Damodara (Krishna and Mother Yashoda)

The Damodara pastime is described mainly in the Bhagavata Purana (Srimad Bhagavatam), Canto 10. As a young child in Gokul, Krishna was very playful and mischievous. One day, Mother Yashoda saw Krishna stealing butter and distributing it to monkeys.
To discipline Him, Mother Yashoda decided to tie Krishna to a wooden mortar using a rope. However, every rope she brought was always two fingers too short. Finally, when Krishna saw her exhaustion and pure love, He allowed Himself to be bound. From this divine event, Krishna became known as Damodara.

Damodara and Vishnu Avatar Concept

Lord Krishna is regarded as the eighth major avatar of Lord Vishnu in many traditions. While Vishnu appears in different forms to restore dharma (righteousness), Krishna’s Damodara form highlights the sweet, loving, and personal aspect of God.
Unlike other Vishnu avatars that destroy evil forces, the Damodara form teaches humanity the value of love, humility, and surrender to God.

Damodara Month (Kartik Maas)

The month of Kartik (October–November) is especially sacred to Lord Damodara. Devotees worship Krishna in His Damodara form by offering lamps daily and singing the Damodarashtakam. This month is considered highly auspicious for devotion and spiritual progress.

Spiritual Message of Damodara

The Damodara form teaches that God is not conquered by power or fear, but by pure love and devotion. It reminds devotees that sincere bhakti can bind the Supreme Lord Himself.
