The Guru (Jupiter) Temple at Alangudi, also known as the Apatsahayeswarar Temple, is one of the nine Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu. This temple represents the planet Guru (Jupiter), who signifies wisdom, education, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

The main deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Apatsahayeswarar, meaning ‘the Lord who helps devotees during difficult times’. Lord Dakshinamurthy, a form of Shiva, represents Guru (Jupiter) in this temple. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Elavarkuzhali.

The temple has historical roots dating back to the Chola dynasty and showcases classic Dravidian architecture. Devotees believe that worshipping here removes Guru Dosha and brings success in education, marriage, and career.

Main Poojas Performed

The poojas at Alangudi are primarily centered around seeking the grace of Jupiter to mitigate “Guru Dosha” and to gain wisdom and prosperity.

    • Guru Peyarchi (Jupiter Transit): This is the most vital event. It occurs once every year when Jupiter moves from one zodiac sign to another. Millions of devotees perform special Laksharchana and Abhishekams during this period.
    • Guru Parihara Homam: A specialized ritual involving sacred fire to appease Lord Guru. It is performed by those whose horoscopes indicate a weak or unfavorable positioning of Jupiter.
    • Saharsranama Archanai: A ritual where the 1,008 names of the Lord are chanted. This is the primary daily offering chosen by devotees for general well-being.
    • Kala Shanthi & Sayarakshai Poojas: Part of the six daily rituals (Aaru Kaala Poojai) performed to the presiding deity, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Elavarkuzhali.
