History of the Temple
The temple’s origin is tied to a famous legend. While walking along the Tunga River, Sri Adi Shankaracharya saw a cobra spreading its hood to provide shade to a spawning frog from the hot sun. Struck by this sight—where natural enemies showed such compassion—he realized the land was a Punya Kshetra (sacred ground).
He established the Sharada Peetham here in the 8th century and installed a sandalwood image of the Goddess of Wisdom. In the 14th century, during the Vijayanagara Empire, the temple was expanded with stone architecture, and the sandalwood idol was replaced with the current Golden Idol of Goddess Sharadamba.
