About History of the Temple

Gurdwara Guru Nanak Jhira Sahib is a sacred Sikh shrine located in Bidar, Karnataka. The gurdwara is associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, who visited Bidar during his travels (Udasis) in the early 16th century. According to Sikh tradition, the local people were suffering due to a severe shortage of drinking water. Guru Nanak Dev Ji struck a hill with his staff (kirpan), and a spring of fresh water emerged, which continues to flow to this day. The word ‘Jhira’ means natural spring. The gurdwara was later developed by Maharaja Ranbir Singh of Patiala in the 20th century and is now a major pilgrimage site.
