About History of the Temple

Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib is one of the most important Sikh shrines in India. It is located in New Delhi and marks the site where the headless body of the ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, was cremated in 1675. After Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was martyred on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for defending religious freedom, a Sikh named Lakhi Shah Vanjara secretly carried the Guru’s body to his home. To avoid detection, Lakhi Shah set his house on fire and cremated the body there. Later, a gurdwara was constructed at this sacred site to honor the supreme sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.

Over time, the gurdwara has undergone several reconstructions. It stands today as a powerful symbol of sacrifice, courage, and the Sikh principle of protecting human rights and freedom of belief.
