History of the Temple

Kalaram Temple is one of the most prominent temples dedicated to Lord Rama, located in Panchavati, Nashik, Maharashtra. The name ‘Kalaram’ comes from the black stone idol of Lord Rama enshrined in the temple. The temple is believed to have been originally ancient but was reconstructed in the 18th century during the Peshwa period, largely due to the efforts of Sardar Rangarao Odhekar. The temple complex also houses the idols of Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshmana. Architecturally, the temple is built in black stone with an impressive shikhara and beautifully carved pillars and walls. Kalaram Temple also holds immense historical and social significance as it was associated with the movements of social reformers, including the temple entry movement led by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Today, it remains a major pilgrimage site, especially during festivals such as Ram Navami and Dussehra.
