Important Days and Dates
The Ellora Jain Caves are ancient rock-cut monuments and are not used for daily temple rituals. However, Jain devotees especially visit during major Jain festivals such as:
- Mahavir Jayanti – Celebrates the birth of Lord Mahavira (March–April)
- Paryushan Parva – The most important Jain festival (August–September)
- Diwali – Observed as the Nirvana day of Lord Mahavira (October–November)
- Kartik Purnima – Considered auspicious for pilgrimage
How to Reach
Delhi to Ellora Jain Caves:
- By Air: Fly from Delhi to Aurangabad Airport. Ellora Caves are about 30 km from Aurangabad. Taxis and buses are available.
- By Train: Trains are available from Delhi to Aurangabad or Jalna railway stations. From there, local transport can be used.
- By Road: Approximate distance is 1,300 km. One can travel via NH 44 and NH 52.
Ahmedabad to Ellora Jain Caves:
- By Air: Fly from Ahmedabad to Aurangabad (direct or via Mumbai). Then travel by road.
- By Train: Trains are available from Ahmedabad to Aurangabad.
- By Road: Approximate distance is 700 km. Buses and private vehicles are available.
History of the Temple
The Ellora Jain Caves, also known as Group C caves at Ellora, were constructed between the 9th and 10th centuries CE. These caves represent the Digambara sect of Jainism and are renowned for their detailed carvings, sculptures, and architectural excellence.
There are five Jain caves (Caves 30–34), with Cave 32, known as Indra Sabha, being the most famous. The caves depict Tirthankaras, Yakshas, Yakshinis, and intricate lotus carvings. They reflect the religious tolerance and cultural harmony that existed in ancient India, as Ellora also houses Hindu and Buddhist caves.
The Ellora Caves are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stand as an important symbol of India’s rich spiritual and artistic heritage.
