History of the Temple
Mangalagiri is one of the prominent pilgrimage locations in Andhra Pradesh and is part of the famed “Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple,” known for the unique offering of panakam (jaggery water) to the deity. This temple is believed to be one of the eight sacred places where Lord Vishnu manifested himself. The hill of Mangalagiri is associated with powerful legends connected to Narasimha Avatar. One of the unique features of the temple is that the idol is a mouth-like opening into which panakam is poured, and it is said that the sound of the Lord drinking the offering can be heard.
Mangalagiri also hosts the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple at the foothill, which is an architectural marvel built during the reign of the Vijayanagara kings. The temples and the hill together form an important Vaishnavite center with references in ancient texts and inscriptions. The site continues to attract devotees from across India.
