After the destruction of Dwarka, Guru Brihaspati and Vayu (the Wind God) installed the idol at Guruvayur, giving the temple its name.

The temple follows strict traditional rituals and is governed by the Guruvayur Devaswom. Despite invasions and natural calamities, the temple has retained its spiritual significance for centuries.
