Delhi – To – Vitthal Rukmini Temple, Pandharpur

  • By Air: Fly from Delhi to Pune Airport. From Pune, Pandharpur is around 210 km by road.
  • By Train: Direct trains are not available. One can travel via Pune, Kurduwadi, or Solapur and then take a connecting train or taxi.
  • By Road: Distance is approximately 1,400 km. Best option is to fly to Pune or Solapur and travel by road.

  • By Air: Fly from Ahmedabad to Pune Airport, then travel 210 km by road to Pandharpur.

History of the Temple

Vitthal Rukmini Temple in Pandharpur is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. Lord Vitthal, considered a form of Lord Krishna, is worshipped here along with Goddess Rukmini. The temple’s history dates back over 800 years and is deeply associated with the Bhakti movement led by saints like Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Tukaram, Sant Namdev, and Sant Chokhamela.

The main sanctum features Lord Vitthal standing on a brick (Veet), symbolizing his love and devotion toward his devotee Pundalik. The temple is known for its unique ritual where devotees touch the feet of Lord Vitthal directly inside the sanctum. The Wari tradition—where devotees (Warkaris) walk hundreds of kilometers singing abhangas—is one of the oldest spiritual traditions in India.
