History of the Temple

Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest temples of Mathura. According to legend, it was established when the ancient city of Mathura was founded, and Lord Shiva took the form of Bhuteshwar—the protector of the city. It is one of the four directional guardian temples (Dik‑palak) of Mathura. The temple also includes the sacred Patal‑Devi Cave.
