History of the Temple
Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The site is historically known as ‘Kamsa Tila’, the place where King Kamsa, Krishna’s tyrant uncle, ruled. The temple complex is built around the ancient prison cell (Garbha‑Griha) where Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned, and where Lord Krishna was born.
Over centuries, the temple faced multiple destructions and reconstructions by different rulers. The present temple was built in the 20th century under the guidance of several Hindu philanthropic groups. Today, it stands as one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites, attracting millions of devotees annually.
