According to legend, the goddess manifested on a golden lotus (Padma) in the temple tank ‘Padma Sarovaram’ after performing penance for 12 years. She appeared in the month of Karthika on Panchami day, hence the significance of the annual Panchami Theertham festival. The temple architecture is in classic Dravidian style and is maintained by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). The complex houses sub-shrines including Sri Krishna Swamy Temple (built in 1221 AD), Sri Sundararaja Swamy Temple, and Suryanarayana Temple.
