History of the Temple
The Lakshmi Devi Temple at Dodda Gaddavalli, located in Hassan district, Karnataka, is one of the earliest Hoysala temples built in 1114 CE during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana. The temple was commissioned by a wealthy merchant named Kullahana Rahuta and his wife Sahaja Devi.
This temple is unique as it is built in the Chatushkuta (four-shrine) architectural style, unlike most Hoysala temples which typically have one or two shrines. The shrines are dedicated to:
• Goddess Lakshmi (main deity)
• Kali
• Shiva
• Vishnu
The temple is constructed using soapstone and showcases early Hoysala architectural features, including intricate carvings, detailed pillars, and beautifully sculpted doorways. It stands as a fine example of early 12th-century craftsmanship and remains an important heritage monument in Karnataka.
