History of Ramanathaswamy Temple

Ramanathaswamy Temple, located on Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu,
is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

According to legend, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here to absolve
the sin of killing Ravana. Goddess Sita formed a Shiva Lingam from sand,
which remains the main deity worshipped today.

The temple is famous for its majestic architecture, the world’s longest
temple corridors, sacred theerthams, and intricate carvings. It flourished
under Pandya kings and later South Indian dynasties.

Ramanathaswamy Temple is an important part of the Char Dham Yatra
and remains one of India’s holiest pilgrimage sites.
